They say absence makes the heart grow fonder...I hope you all, loyal KevFabFood fans did not miss me too much - apologies for the long wait for my next foodie installment - I hope this week's blog makes a small step back into your hearts... It is said that to think outside the box, be unique and different is always best - I agree...however this week I want to focus on being inside the box... You L.O.V.E! to cook, experiment and have fun in the kitchen...like most of us home cooks, some dishes just seem to be scary or complicated to try - we need a guiding hand to help us along the first time - this is where the box comes in - Woolworths, in particular, have awesome help-you-along boxes that is there to help bring out the cook and baker inside of you! We all need a little help in our cooking journey - sometimes to start cooking and thinking outside the box...we first need some little help and guidance from inside the box! |

A belated Valentine's Day wish from KevFabFood
That is honest and true!
The heart in all its forms is the universal symbol for L.O.V.E! and yet it is also the organ to keep us all alive - it keeps us alive physically, as well as the memories of our loved ones alive, as we remember them - our Heart's Treasure Box is all about our soul's memories!
February is the month of love and its also the month when my family is touched with wonderful memories of our own - it would have been my mom and dad's 40th wedding anniversary today...its also a week that we have been blessed with another child, grandchild and cousin into our family - my cousin had a beautiful baby girl - in a magical, amazing and beautiful gesture, they used my mom's name as part of hers - keeping my mom's memory and spirit alive for years to come - in this special time, I would like to dedicate this week's blog in honour of my Mom and Dad...and to my Cousin and Her Husband!
As its the month of all things sweet and decedent, I would be amiss not to make my foodie tribute a sweet one - this is a simple and easy treat to make...I am sure most of you have made these already (or at least had one) - I remember making these with my mom, so I call them Rosy Squares :

KevFabFood is always on the lookout to bring you the best of the best...this week is no different! First I brought you the App that told you all the good places to go and eat (Zomato) and now I bring you another App for your Apple and Android phones that I have personally used and tested and can personally highly recommend...the app this time is :
Zapper - this is a clever (and free) app that allows you to pay for your restaurant bill without having to take out your wallet or wait for the waiter / waitress to bring you the card payment machine!
Once you have downloaded the app, you register the app with your name, email, cell phone number - the app sends you a code to verify your downloaded app - once done you then scan / add your card details - you can add as many as you want - Cheque, Credit & Business Card...Visa & Master only.
At participating restaurants, you will see at the bottom of your bill a square bar-code, open the app and your phone will take a picture of the code which will then link your bill to the payment page...here you add the tip you wish to give, select the pre-loaded card details you want to pay with and hit the "pay" button...immediately you receive an E-Mail verification of payment!
Once paid, write on the bill "paid by Zapper"
For a limited time only - first time users of the app, will receive R25.00 off the first bill you pay using the Zapper App!
I was sceptical and worried at first about the app, but I can honestly highly recommend the app - it has proven to be safe, convenient and fun to use!
So Next Time Don't Swipe It...ZAP IT!
Sometimes it takes an intuitive, brave and risk-taking cook to try to use certain ingredients in slightly different ways - making for some delicious and unusual meals! This week I share 2 of my creations for you to try at home...
1) Salad Dressing - a perfect companion to a Greek or Green salad, simply poured over the salad and tossed gives the fresh vegetables a luxurious taste and adds a special magic to the simple side dish or starter!
The Surprise Use...for an incredible easy, delicious and juiciest chicken dinner - use Woolworth's Reduce Oil Italian Dressing (or any equivalent - Knorr is also a good one to use) - this dish was made a few week's ago and it was a huge hit and will now form part of my proud KevFabFood home-made recipe...

2) The Humble Lemon - used in teas, drinks or even packed with salt to make preserved lemons for Moroccan dishes. The next quick and easy surprise use is simple...Place fresh cut lemons into rice as it is boiling to provide a fresh, flavour-filled side dish - or simply squeeze some of the juice onto fresh cooked vegetables to give them a fresh, alive zing and taste!
Hope you enjoyed this foodie adventure - let me know of your family secret ingredients and as always...remember - the main secret ingredient that continues to be essential to any cook...L.O.V.E!
A wonderful new foodie series started on MNet (channel 101, DStv) tonight at 18:30 - Junior Masterchef USA. This show is incredible - it showcases children between the ages of 8 to13 doing what most adults can only dream of cooking in the kitchen; as well as top adult Masterchef contestants battle to master. Yet these youngsters, with their L.O.V.E! of food and passion for cooking succeed and WOW everyone who watches, even the one and only Gordon Ramsey - this is truly inspirational and something I thought I needed to share with all of you with children...
I remember being a child and cooking at home - I used every pot, pan and utensils in the kitchen and made lots of mess (which I left to be cleaned up by my sous chefs...aka Mom and Dad) - some of my dishes worked and others were a miss, never to be tried again...the one thing I remember with L.O.V.E! and fondness is my mom and dad always encouraging and supporting my kitchen adventures and I believe it is due to these early fun and magical memories that I love to cook and experiment in the kitchen today!
So...let 2015 be the year that you encourage your little chefs to explore and learn in the kitchen - a little mess will create long term passion and love for food and cooking!
